Spain’s largest wildfire of the year has burned around 12,000 hectares in the northeastern province of Zaragoza, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,100 residents, according to Spanish public broadcaster RTVE.
Authorities said the blaze, which erupted on Wednesday in the Cinco Villas region, remained “quite active” on Friday, with significant overnight expansion.
The fire has prompted the evacuation of five municipalities in Zaragoza and one in the neighbouring region of Navarre.
Officials said the blaze has spread across a 60-kilometre (37-mile) perimeter, while several roads in the affected areas remain closed.
Electricity has been restored to all affected towns.
More than 400 ground personnel and 19 aircraft have been deployed to contain the fire, with emergency crews focusing overnight on protecting homes in Uncastillo.
