France coach Didier Deschamps says his side will not surrender possession to Spain in Tuesday’s World Cup semifinal, predicting a fierce battle for control as the two European giants meet for a place in the final.
With midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni available again, Deschamps dismissed suggestions that France would simply sit back and rely on counterattacks against a Spain side renowned for dominating possession.
“Spain can apply a lot of pressure, but we are also a team who need the ball,” Deschamps told reporters. “There will be a battle for control.”
Spain have impressed throughout the tournament with their high pressing, patient build-up play and ability to dictate the tempo of matches. However, France believe they possess the tactical flexibility to adapt to different situations.
Midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery said Les Bleus are capable of hurting Spain in several ways.
“Spain have great quality on the ball,” he said. “We have the qualities to attack quickly on the counter, to keep possession ourselves and to defend well.”
“The course of the game will dictate things. I cannot say now exactly how the match will unfold.”
The winner of Tuesday’s clash will advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
