PM Orders Full Digitisation of Overseas Remittances to Advance Cashless Economy

Jarida Report

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to ensure that all overseas remittances are processed through digital channels, describing the move as a key step toward building a cashless economy and improving transparency.

Chairing a meeting on digital payments, the prime minister instructed banks and financial institutions to play a more active role in expanding digital financial services and commended his economic team for the progress made over the past year.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), 92% of overseas remittances received between July 2025 and June 2026 were already transferred through digital channels.

Officials also told the meeting that Pakistan recorded 11.9 billion digital transactions during the same period, while the number of mobile banking users rose from 95 million to 137 million.

Describing the growth in mobile banking adoption as “a significant achievement,” the prime minister directed authorities to complete the digitisation of remittance flows from abroad.

He also praised the expansion of QR code-based payments, noting that the number of merchants accepting digital payments had increased by 300% over the past year, and called for stronger public awareness campaigns to encourage wider use of digital payment systems.
