Questions Persist Over US-Iran Deal as Recovery of Trade and Energy Flows Expected to Take Time

Jarida Today

Questions remain over the implementation of the interim agreement between the United States and Iran, with analysts warning that shipping and energy exports may take weeks to return to normal despite the announcement of a framework deal.

The agreement would extend the fragile ceasefire reached in April by another 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has largely restricted since the outbreak of hostilities following US-Israeli strikes in February.

Speaking at the G7 summit in France, US President Donald Trump said the text of the agreement would be released publicly in the coming days and asserted that it clearly states Iran will not possess a nuclear weapon.

Trump also said he supported the idea of submitting the agreement to Congress for review, a proposal backed by some Republican lawmakers.

More contentious issues, including the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, are expected to be addressed during the next phase of negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said those talks will begin in Switzerland on Friday following the formal signing of the framework agreement.
