On May 20, 2025, the federal cabinet of Pakistan approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal, the highest military rank in the country. This honor was bestowed in recognition of his leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the conflict with India known as Marka-i-Haq. General Munir is only the second individual in Pakistan’s history to receive this rank, following General Mohammad Ayub Khan in 1959.

The cabinet also decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zahar Ahmed Babar Sidhu. President Asif Ali Zardari endorsed the promotion, commending General Munir’s effective defense strategy and successful counter to Indian aggression. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the armed forces and martyrs, stating, “Today, Pakistan salutes Field Marshal Asim Munir as well as our brave countrymen, soldiers, martyrs, and their families.”

General Munir expressed gratitude for the honor, dedicating it to the nation, armed forces, and especially the martyrs and veterans. He emphasized that the promotion is not just a personal achievement but a recognition of the collective sacrifices made by countless individuals for Pakistan’s sovereignty.

The recent military confrontation between India and Pakistan escalated following the Pahalgam attack. In early May, India conducted air strikes in Punjab and Azad Kashmir, leading to civilian casualties. Pakistan responded by downing five Indian jets. Subsequent drone interceptions and airbase strikes heightened tensions until U.S. intervention facilitated a ceasefire on May 10. Both nations have since agreed to maintain the ceasefire indefinitely, though India continues its aggressive posturing.

In recognition of their services during the operation, the government announced that officers, soldiers, war veterans, martyrs, and civilians from various sectors will be awarded high government honors.
