ASEAN Chooses Dialogue Over Retaliation in Response to U.S. Tariffs

Jarida Report

In response to the United States’ recent imposition of reciprocal tariffs ranging from 10% to 49%, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Timor-Leste have collectively chosen not to retaliate. Instead, they are advocating for constructive engagement and dialogue to address the challenges posed by these tariffs.

During a special meeting in Kuala Lumpur, ASEAN economic ministers emphasized their commitment to an open, inclusive, and rules-based multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core. They expressed concerns that the U.S. tariffs could hinder ASEAN’s economic growth and regional integration efforts. The ministers also acknowledged the WTO director-general’s warning about the potential global economic risks stemming from escalating trade tensions.

Recognizing the 90-day pause on the implementation of these tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, ASEAN sees this as an opportunity to seek a pragmatic and mutually beneficial resolution. To navigate the evolving economic landscape, ASEAN plans to establish a Geoeconomics Task Force aimed at formulating coherent regional policy responses to emerging economic and geopolitical challenges.

The outcomes of this meeting are set to be presented at the upcoming Special ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting, where further strategies to mitigate potential disruptions to regional trade, supply chains, and investments will be discussed.
