Flooded and Forgotten: The Haunting Reality of Flood-Ravaged Schools in Sindh

Jarida Report

In 2022, devastating floods struck Sindh, Pakistan, causing extensive damage to the region’s educational infrastructure. Approximately 20 kilometers from Dadu district, the Government Primary Ibrahim Leghari School stands as a poignant example of this destruction. Teacher Majeed Leghari recalls witnessing entire villages submerged, with families clinging to salvaged belongings and children navigating waist-deep waters.

The floods left 19,808 schools in ruins across Sindh, with 7,503 completely destroyed and 12,305 partially damaged. This disaster disrupted the education of 2.3 million students, many of whom continue to face challenges in resuming their studies. The provincial education department estimates that reconstructing these schools to a minimum standard would require Rs224 billion.

The prolonged neglect of these educational facilities has led to a generation growing up without adequate schooling, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting future opportunities. Addressing this crisis necessitates immediate and sustained efforts from both government and non-governmental organizations to rebuild and revitalize the educational infrastructure in Sindh.
