6 Killed as 2 Helicopters Collide Over Rio de Janeiro

Jarida Report

At least six people were killed after two helicopters collided in western Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, according to local firefighters.

The aircraft crashed into the parking area of an electric vehicle dealership in the suburb of Recreio dos Bandeirantes, triggering a fire that engulfed at least 20 vehicles.

Fire officials said preliminary information indicated the helicopters collided mid-air. All six victims were crew members aboard the two aircraft.

Rio de Janeiro Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere said one of the helicopters was carrying foreign nationals, but provided no further details.

Emergency officials said one helicopter was found ablaze among the vehicles with five victims inside, while the second aircraft crashed about 100 metres away and carried only the pilot, who also died.

Authorities said the exact cause of the accident remains unclear and investigations are underway.
