The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new chipless National Identity Card featuring a secure QR code, aimed at reducing reliance on imported technology and making digital identity verification more accessible.
The new identity card has been manufactured locally by the National Security Printing Company (NSPC) in Karachi in accordance with NADRA’s technical and security requirements.
Unlike existing chip-based cards, the new design replaces the imported microchip with a secure QR code, helping reduce dependence on foreign-sourced components while retaining digital verification capabilities.
The federal government approved the issuance of the new card on February 23.
Cardholders’ identities can be verified by scanning the QR code with a smartphone through NADRA’s Pak Identity (PakID) mobile application.
The QR code will contain relevant information about the cardholder, including their photograph and identity details.
NADRA said the system would allow institutions to capture information such as names and addresses directly into computerised systems, making identity verification more efficient and reducing errors associated with manual data entry.
The locally produced card represents part of NADRA’s efforts to promote technological self-reliance while expanding digital identity verification services across Pakistan.
