WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump is preparing to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington next week, with an elaborate reception planned despite limited expectations for major breakthroughs at the summit.
US military honor guards have been rehearsing for the visit, while a newly constructed White House helipad is ready for Xi’s arrival. Trump will personally receive the Chinese president at Joint Base Andrews next Wednesday, with their formal meetings scheduled for the following day, a US official confirmed.
The summit comes amid growing tensions between the world’s two largest economies, including an escalating race for technological dominance and concerns over the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
Trump’s war with Iran is also expected to feature in the broader discussions. Beijing is seeking to avoid US sanctions targeting countries that maintain relations with Tehran, while reports have emerged alleging that China provided Iran with intelligence used in an attack on US troops.
Trade tensions remain another major challenge, with the two countries continuing to navigate disputes over tariffs, technology and economic competition.
At the same time, concerns over a possible military confrontation involving Taiwan remain a significant issue in US-China relations.
The summit reflects a broader effort to manage tensions between the United States, which is seeking to maintain its global position, and China, whose growing economic and technological influence is reshaping the international balance of power.
Trump is also placing considerable emphasis on the ceremonial aspects of Xi’s visit. During his own state visit to China in May, Trump received a lavish welcome, including a reception by China’s vice president upon his arrival in Beijing.
“I’ll be discussing almost everything with him,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday.
