Syrian Security Forces Arrest Alleged ISIS Cell Leader in Daraa

Jarida Report

Syrian security forces have arrested an alleged senior member of an ISIS cell accused of involvement in the killing of three Internal Security personnel in southern Daraa province, state news agency SANA reported on Saturday.

Authorities identified the suspect as Walid al-Fallah, describing him as one of the leaders of the cell operating in the city of al-Sanamayn.

The three security personnel were killed on Thursday during an operation to arrest a wanted suspect. According to authorities, an armed group attacked a security patrol, triggering a gun battle.

Internal Security Forces subsequently said the armed group was affiliated with ISIS, also known as Daesh. Security units later raided the location where members of the group had taken shelter after they reportedly refused calls to surrender.

On Friday, authorities announced that investigators had identified the cell they believed was responsible for the attack.

Security forces also reported recovering weapons, ammunition and bomb-making equipment during searches of the homes of two individuals identified by authorities as leaders of the cell.

Al-Fallah was subsequently taken into custody by Internal Security Forces in Daraa province.

The allegations concerning his role in the cell and the deaths of the three security personnel are based on statements by Syrian authorities and have not yet been established through judicial proceedings.
