Spain late on Thursday closed the Beni Enzar border crossing with Morocco in its North African enclave of Melilla after a large-scale attempt by irregular migrants to enter the territory, while thousands of similar attempts were reported in Ceuta, Spanish media said.
Authorities shut the crossing as security forces moved to regain control of the situation.
Melilla President Juan Jose Imbroda said between 300 and 400 migrants had entered the autonomous city through both land and sea routes.
He said the situation in Melilla was far less severe than in Ceuta, Spain’s other North African enclave, where authorities faced a much larger wave of attempted crossings from Morocco on the same day.
Imbroda said the situation had been largely contained, adding that the Moroccan gendarmerie had cooperated with Spanish authorities in managing the incident.
The temporary closure of the Beni Enzar crossing came as Spanish security forces continued efforts to restore normal operations along the border.
