Six people were killed and two others suffered severe burns after a fire broke out at a construction site in central Brussels, Belgian broadcaster RTBF reported on Wednesday.
The blaze erupted at around 7:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday inside an elevator shaft at the Oxy Tower project on Place De Brouckere, where the former administrative headquarters of the City of Brussels is being redeveloped into a mixed-use complex.
According to the labour inspectorate, around 250 workers were on site when the fire started.
Following the evacuation, six workers of Belgian and Romanian nationality were reported missing.
Emergency responders later recovered six bodies from the elevator shaft.
Authorities said the victims have not yet been formally identified, adding that they cannot confirm whether the recovered bodies are those of the missing workers until the identification process is complete.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
