Saudi Arabia Issues Emergency Alert in Najran Amid Series of Houthi Missile Attacks

Jarida Report

Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence issued an early warning alert in the southern city of Najran on Thursday, advising residents of a potential threat before later announcing that the danger had passed.

Authorities did not disclose the nature of the threat or provide further details about what prompted the warning.

The alert came amid a series of reported ballistic missile attacks targeting different parts of the kingdom.

Earlier on Thursday, the Saudi-led coalition announced that air defence systems had intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi group towards Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.

On Wednesday, coalition forces also reported intercepting and destroying another Houthi ballistic missile aimed at the western city of Taif.

Meanwhile, debris from two intercepted missiles caused damage to a building, a construction project and a vehicle in the capital, Riyadh, late Tuesday, according to Saudi Civil Defence. No casualties were reported.

The incidents come amid heightened hostilities between the Houthis and the Saudi-led military coalition, which supports Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

Saudi Arabia has led military operations against the Houthis since March 2015, following the group’s takeover of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other territories in 2014.
