Cristiano Ronaldo’s FIFA World Cup career came to an end after Portugal were eliminated by Spain with a 1-0 defeat in the Round of 16 on Monday.
Mikel Merino scored the winning goal in first-half stoppage time to send Spain into the quarterfinals and end Portugal’s campaign.
Following the final whistle, the 41-year-old Ronaldo was seen in tears as he applauded supporters before leaving the pitch. Speaking after the match, he said he leaves the tournament with a “clear conscience” after giving everything for his country.
