Qatar Condemns Attack on LNG Tanker in Gulf, Warns of Threat to Global Energy Supplies

Jarida Report

Qatar has strongly condemned an attack on one of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers in Gulf waters, warning that the incident poses a serious threat to maritime security, regional stability and global energy supplies.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the vessel, Al Mayeda, belongs to Qatar Gas Transport Company, commonly known as Nakilat.

The ministry described the incident as “a dangerous act that threatens the safety of maritime navigation and the security of global energy supplies.”

It emphasised that Qatar “reserves the right to take all necessary measures under international law and the UN Charter” to protect its property, national interests, vessels and crews.

According to Nakilat, the tanker was struck by unidentified objects while sailing through Gulf waters on the evening of October 30.

The company confirmed that no crew members were injured and no environmental damage was reported.

However, neither the nature of the objects nor the identity of those responsible has been established. The precise location of the incident was also not disclosed.

Qatari authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack and identify those responsible.

The Foreign Ministry warned that such “reckless and irresponsible practices” could have serious consequences for regional security and the global economy.

It also highlighted the potential environmental dangers of attacks on energy tankers, including risks to marine ecosystems and the water security of Gulf countries.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important shipping route for global oil and LNG exports.

Maritime security reports have documented several attacks and security incidents involving commercial vessels in the region during October, some resulting in fires and damage.

Security concerns have intensified against the backdrop of renewed tensions between the United States and Iran following military confrontations earlier this year.

The latest incident has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of commercial shipping and the potential disruption of international energy supplies. Condemns Attack on LNG Tanker in Gulf, Warns of Threat to Global Energy Supplies
