The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast above-normal temperatures across most parts of the country from July to September, while warning of an increased risk of flash floods, landslides and urban flooding during the monsoon season.
According to the seasonal outlook, Balochistan, Punjab and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to experience higher-than-average temperatures. Meanwhile, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to receive normal to slightly above-normal rainfall.
The PMD warned that heavier rainfall in mountainous regions could trigger flash floods and landslides, while also increasing river flows and water levels in reservoirs.
It said major cities in Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could face urban flooding during periods of intense rainfall.
The department also cautioned that rising temperatures in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir could accelerate glacier melting, heightening the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
The forecast further noted that below-normal rainfall in parts of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan may lead to water shortages for Kharif crops and increase irrigation demand.
