Parliament Approves Two-Month Governor’s Rule, Emergency in KP

Jarida Report

ISLAMABAD: A joint sitting of Parliament has approved resolutions calling for the imposition of Governor’s Rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for two months, ARY News reported.

The joint session, chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, passed both resolutions by a majority vote. Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry presented the resolutions seeking parliamentary approval.

Opposition lawmakers protested and chanted slogans during the proceedings.

The National Assembly and Senate had also endorsed the resolutions during separate sessions a day earlier. Following their approval at the joint sitting, Parliament was adjourned sine die.

Earlier, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah said extending the emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until 2029 would be justified if it helped restore peace and protect citizens.

Speaking on ARY News programme Khabar, Sanaullah said the emergency could remain in place for at least a year and potentially continue until 2029. He expressed hope that the necessary measures to restore peace would be completed within that period.

Sanaullah said the measures were intended to eliminate terrorism and protect the public, adding that successful implementation of the federal government’s assigned responsibilities would be a significant achievement.

He referred to the sacrifices made by security personnel and the thousands of lives lost in the fight against terrorism, expressing confidence that the campaign would succeed. He also said counterterrorism operations would be conducted on a large scale but maintained that no one would be displaced.

Criticising Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, Sanaullah described him as inexperienced in politics and compared his position within the party to that of former Punjab chief minister Usman Buzdar.
