On the night of June 2, 2025, a series of low-intensity earthquakes in Karachi prompted the evacuation of inmates at Malir District Jail. During this process, 213 prisoners escaped by exploiting the ensuing chaos. Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon reported that 78 of the escapees have been recaptured, while efforts continue to apprehend the remaining fugitives. One inmate was killed and two others were injured during the escape. The incident has raised concerns about prison security and emergency preparedness in the region.
