OpenAI will publicly launch its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.6, on Thursday after delaying its release last month at the request of the US government over national security concerns.
The postponement came amid growing scrutiny in Washington over advanced AI systems, with officials concerned that increasingly powerful models could be exploited by the military or intelligence agencies of rival nations, including China and Russia.
The United States and China are locked in an intensifying race to develop next-generation AI technologies, which experts say could significantly enhance cyberattack capabilities against critical infrastructure and other complex systems.
The delay follows broader US efforts to tighten oversight of advanced AI. Last month, OpenAI rival Anthropic temporarily restricted access to its most advanced models after a US export control order before restoring access once additional safeguards had been implemented.
