Micron Technology said on Thursday it plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade in a newly established research laboratory in Boise, Idaho, as it seeks to develop advanced memory technologies and computing systems amid rapidly growing demand from artificial intelligence.
The new Micron Research Labs will focus on memory innovation, future computing systems and technologies supporting next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. The facility will also bring together researchers, customers, universities, government institutions and other participants in the semiconductor industry.
The $10 billion investment is in addition to the more than $250 billion Micron has previously committed to manufacturing and research and development across the United States.
The Boise laboratory will form part of Micron’s wider research network spanning the US, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan.
Micron, alongside major memory manufacturers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, has benefited from surging demand associated with the global expansion of AI infrastructure.
In particular, the rapid adoption of AI has increased demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which enables large volumes of data to be supplied quickly to AI accelerators and has become a critical component of advanced computing systems.
The investment also comes as the Trump administration pushes to expand semiconductor production and technological development within the United States, seeking to reduce dependence on overseas manufacturing and strengthen the country’s position in artificial intelligence.
Micron expects to break ground on the Boise facility in 2027. Once operational, it will have capacity for hundreds of researchers and will also be designed to host international scientific conferences and workshops.
