LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has clarified her remarks about a teacher accused of assaulting a student with a shoe, saying her comments were directed at the alleged treatment of the child.
In a post on X on Saturday, Maryam shared a photograph of the teacher, who was arrested after allegedly beating a student over the theft of a box of toffees from the school canteen.
Reacting to the allegations, the chief minister wrote: “Beat him black and blue across his face with a shoe. Shame.”
Her remarks drew criticism on social media, with several users interpreting them as an endorsement of violence against the teacher.
Social media user Cheema Vai criticised the response, saying that publicly humiliating a teacher through social media was not an example of good governance.
Another user, Umer Farooq, argued that no one should assume the role of judge and jury, regardless of the alleged offence, warning that doing so could undermine the rule of law and create disorder in society.
The controversy has centred on the chief minister’s response to the alleged assault and the importance of addressing such cases through legal channels.
