KP Government Says Sohail Afridi Remains in Protective Custody as Corruption Allegations Investigated

Jarida Report

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Information and Public Relations Adviser Samar Haroon Bilour said on Friday that suspended Chief Minister Sohail Afridi remained in protective custody while authorities gathered evidence concerning allegations of corruption involving billions of rupees.

Addressing a press conference at the Information Cell in the Civil Secretariat, Bilour said the provincial government was committed to institutional reforms, transparency and improving public service delivery.

She did not disclose further details about the allegations against Afridi or the evidence collected so far.

Responding to questions about Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Bilour described him as a senior and respected politician but suggested that his recent criticism reflected frustration over his exclusion from political decision-making.

She said his dissatisfaction might also stem from not receiving the role he had expected in the current technocratic setup. However, she added that the government remained open to his constructive suggestions and guidance.

Turning to the Dir Colony tragedy in Peshawar, Bilour announced that investigations had been completed and that a detailed report would soon be made public.

She revealed that inspections of government and private schools and seminaries across the province had identified 4,049 educational institutions requiring repairs or rehabilitation.

The government was preparing a comprehensive improvement plan, while students from affected institutions would be transferred to nearby government schools. Class-wise adjustments and second shifts would be introduced wherever necessary to prevent disruption to education.

Bilour further stated that a subcommittee was examining the responsibilities of relevant government departments and tehsil municipal administrations to establish whether negligence had occurred in building approvals, inspections or supervision.

The findings are expected to help determine accountability and guide measures to improve the safety of educational institutions across the province.
