Requests of drugmakers to extend the year-end deadline for them to improve their manufacturing facilities to international standards have been rejected by India amid public fury over the recent deaths of 24 children at least, who had cough syrup which was produced locally. According to Udaya Bhaskar of the All India Drugs Control Officers’ Confederation which represents pharmaceutical regulators said if India had abided by its original deadline, the latest deaths could have been avoided.
