Hawaii’s 500-Year-Old Holei Sea Arch Collapses Into Pacific

Jarida Report

HAWAII: The Holei Sea Arch, a historic coastal landmark in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has collapsed into the Pacific Ocean after standing for more than five centuries.

The natural arch, which rose about 27 metres above the coastline, was formed roughly 550 years ago when molten lava from a volcanic eruption shaped the surrounding rock.

According to the US National Park Service (NPS), the formation was always considered temporary and was expected to eventually collapse as erosion gradually weakened the cliff.

The NPS said the arch’s lifespan was determined by ongoing erosion, particularly the repeated impact of waves. While officials knew the structure would eventually crumble into the sea, they could not predict exactly when it would happen.

The agency has urged visitors to avoid putting themselves at risk while viewing the changing coastal landscape.
