German police shot dead a 21-year-old man on Sunday after locating him a day after he allegedly drove a vehicle into pedestrians near Berlin’s annual Pride celebrations, killing one person and injuring dozens.
The attack took place at around 10 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) on Saturday in Tiergarten Park, near the Brandenburg Gate, close to the Christopher Street Day celebrations, one of Europe’s largest annual LGBTQ events.
Authorities said one person was killed and 29 others were injured, with some victims reportedly wounded by a bladed weapon allegedly carried by the suspect.
Berlin police said officers located the suspect at around 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Sunday at an allotment garden complex in the Spandau district.
According to police, the man ran towards officers while armed with a bladed weapon, prompting officers to open fire. Despite emergency treatment by the Berlin Fire Department, he died at the scene.
Witnesses Dagmar Euent and Juliane Gotzler, who were at nearby garden plots, said they heard several gunshots and were instructed by police to remain inside their garden hut.
Earlier on Sunday, police identified the suspect as Abdul B., 21, and appealed to the public for information on his whereabouts.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the suspect had previously come to the attention of authorities because of numerous criminal offences, radicalisation and alleged links to the Islamist scene. He said the suspect was a German citizen of Lebanese heritage, born in Germany in 2005.
The incident is the latest in a series of vehicle attacks in Germany in recent years that have intensified debate over public security and immigration.
