At least 15 newborn babies were killed after a fire broke out in the gynaecology ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday, hospital officials said.
According to PIMS officials, 16 newborns were inside the nursery when the fire erupted, with only one baby rescued.
Rescue officials said the blaze apparently started after an air-conditioner compressor exploded inside the nursery, triggering a fire in the ward.
Emergency teams rushed to the hospital and managed to extinguish the blaze. Cooling operations were subsequently launched to prevent the fire from reigniting and to secure the affected area.
Authorities have yet to provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or announce whether an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
