Andy Burnham Pledges ‘Distinctively Labour’ Direction After Winning Party Leadership

Jarida Report

Andy Burnham on Friday pledged to steer Britain’s Labour Party in a “distinctively Labour” direction after being elected the party’s new leader, promising to unite the party, devolve power from Westminster and restore public trust in politics.

In his first speech as leader, Burnham unveiled a five-point plan centred on party unity, political renewal and constitutional reform.

He said his priorities would be to build “one Labour team,” create “a new politics,” redefine Labour’s political direction, represent communities “everywhere” across the United Kingdom, and transfer more power from Westminster and Whitehall to local communities.

Addressing the party’s future direction, Burnham said Labour would cooperate with other political parties where appropriate but would do so “from the clarity of knowing exactly where we stand.”

“As your leader, I will set a direction that is distinctively Labour,” Burnham said.

«”We won’t try to out-Green the Greens or out-Reform Reform or do what we’ve done in the past — wearing too many Tory clothes,” he added.»
