Amanda Serrano Announces Retirement After Final World Title Defence in Puerto Rico on January 9

Jarida Report

Puerto Rican boxing star Amanda Serrano will bring her illustrious career to an end after defending her unified featherweight world titles against Australia’s Skye Falzon on January 9, her promoter Most Valuable Promotions announced on Wednesday.

The farewell bout, titled “The Last Walk”, will take place at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan, giving the 38-year-old champion an opportunity to conclude her career in front of her home supporters.

Serrano will defend her World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight titles in what is expected to be her final professional appearance.

The seven-division world champion enters the contest with a professional record of 50 victories, four defeats and one draw, including 32 knockout wins.

She also has an opportunity to establish a new record for knockouts in women’s professional boxing, having equalled the mark held by former American champion Christy Martin.

Reflecting on her career, Serrano expressed gratitude for the opportunities boxing had provided her and her family.

“Boxing has been my life and I never could have imagined the journey it would take me and my family on,” she said in a statement.

Serrano recalled the challenges faced by female boxers during the early stages of her career, when women’s bouts received limited recognition and were often staged at smaller venues.

“From the early days when women’s boxing was fighting for recognition in small theatre shows, to headlining Madison Square Garden in New York, reaching millions of fans around the world on the biggest shows, and helping open doors for the next generation of female fighters … I always believed and I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished,” she added.

One of Serrano’s defining achievements came in April 2022, when she faced Ireland’s Katie Taylor in the first women’s boxing contest to headline New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The historic event marked a major milestone for women’s boxing and helped elevate the sport’s international profile.

Serrano and Taylor subsequently developed one of the most celebrated rivalries in modern women’s boxing, meeting three times in high-profile contests.

Taylor won all three encounters, completing the trilogy with a majority-decision victory in 2025.

Despite those defeats, Serrano’s achievements across multiple weight divisions have established her as one of the most accomplished fighters in the history of women’s boxing.

She remains Puerto Rico’s only undisputed boxing champion and has captured world titles in seven different weight categories.

Her final appearance against Falzon will offer Serrano the opportunity to defend her championship belts one last time while potentially securing sole possession of the women’s knockout record.

The January 9 event is set to mark the conclusion of a career that has helped transform the visibility and commercial appeal of women’s professional boxing.
