Death Toll from Jordan Church Attack Rises to Eight as Nation Observes Three Days of Mourning

Jarida Report

The death toll from Friday’s deadly attack on mourners attending a funeral at Hamoud Church in Jordan’s southern Karak Governorate has risen to eight, the country’s health minister confirmed on Saturday.

Speaking to Jordanian state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka, Health Minister Ibrahim al-Badour provided an update on the casualties, revealing that another victim had succumbed to their injuries.

“One of those injured in the terrorist act remains in critical condition,” the minister said.

The latest figures mark an increase from the seven fatalities reported by Jordanian authorities on Friday.

Jordan’s Public Security Director Obaidallah Maaytah had previously announced that seven people were killed and 27 others wounded in the attack.

The assault targeted mourners gathered for a funeral at Hamoud Church in Karak Governorate, prompting widespread condemnation and heightened security concerns.

With the death toll now reaching eight and at least one injured person remaining in critical condition, authorities continue to assess the consequences of the attack.

Following the incident, Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan ordered three days of nationwide mourning, beginning Friday, October 23.

The prime minister also instructed government institutions to lower the national flag to half-staff throughout the mourning period.

The directive applies to ministries, government departments and other public institutions across the country.

The mourning period is intended to honour those killed in the attack as Jordan responds to the tragedy and its aftermath.
