Pakistan has strongly condemned a deadly attack on a church funeral procession in southern Jordan that left at least seven people dead and dozens injured, expressing solidarity with the Jordanian government and its people.
In a statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Office denounced the incident as a “heinous terrorist attack” and reaffirmed Islamabad’s opposition to terrorism in all its forms.
The attack took place on Friday in the village of Hammoud, in Jordan’s Karak Governorate, where armed assailants reportedly opened fire on mourners gathered for a funeral procession at a Greek Orthodox church.
The Foreign Office conveyed its condolences to the government and people of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, particularly the families of those killed in the attack.
It also expressed hopes for the swift recovery of those wounded.
“Pakistan stands in firm solidarity with the brotherly people of Jordan in their fight against terrorism, and reiterates its strongest condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations”, the statement said.
According to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, the attackers arrived in a vehicle before stepping out and opening fire on people attending the funeral procession.
Security authorities subsequently launched a manhunt to locate and apprehend those responsible.
Initial official reports placed the death toll at six, but Director of Public Security Major General Abdullah Al-Maaytah later confirmed that the number had risen to seven.
He said 34 people had been injured, with 27 still receiving medical treatment.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II condemned the shooting and pledged a forceful response against those responsible.
“The terrorist attack against Karak will be met with the harshest retaliation,” the monarch wrote on X.
“We will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation.”
Images broadcast by Jordanian state television channel Al-Mamlaka showed King Abdullah arriving in Karak on Friday evening following the attack.
Jordanian authorities continued their search for the perpetrators as the country responded to the deadly assault on mourners at the church.
