Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Jolts Khuzdar and Surrounding Areas in Balochistan

Jarida Report

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck parts of Balochistan on Saturday morning, with strong tremors reported in Khuzdar, Kalat, Surab and nearby areas.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake originated at a depth of 25 kilometres, with its epicentre located approximately 48 kilometres northwest of Khuzdar.

The tremors caused alarm among residents, prompting many people to leave their homes and gather in open spaces as a precaution.

Despite the intensity of the earthquake, the district administration reported no casualties or damage to property in its initial assessment.

Officials said relevant government departments and emergency response institutions had been placed on alert, while authorities continued monitoring the situation for any developments.

The administration also urged residents to avoid circulating unverified reports and rely on information released through official channels.

Balochistan has experienced several earthquakes in recent months.

In August, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck the Dalbandin area. The tremor originated at a depth of 35 kilometres, with its epicentre approximately 100 kilometres southwest of the town.

During the same month, a stronger magnitude 5.4 earthquake centred in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region was felt across several parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Peshawar and other areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

That earthquake occurred at a depth of 187 kilometres.

Authorities in Khuzdar and neighbouring districts remained on alert following Saturday’s tremors, although no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage were received.
