Sudan’s Burhan Writes to Trump, Reaffirms Commitment to US-Led Peace Efforts

Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced Thursday that he had written to US President Donald Trump, expressing his government’s willingness to cooperate with American efforts to end Sudan’s prolonged civil war.

In a statement posted on X, Burhan confirmed that he had contacted the US president to reiterate Sudan’s support for Washington’s diplomatic initiatives.

“I wrote to President Donald Trump reaffirming Sudan’s commitment to U.S. peace efforts,” he said.

Burhan also emphasised that Sudan was prepared to engage constructively with other parties in pursuit of a political settlement.

“The Government of Sudan is ready to work in good faith with all parties for a just, lasting peace that safeguards our sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, & our people’s dignity,” he added.

His remarks followed renewed international concern over civilian casualties in the conflict.

Earlier this week, Massad Boulos, a senior adviser to the US president, condemned an October 9 drone strike in An Nuhud, West Kordofan, which reportedly killed at least 12 civilians.

Meanwhile, fighting has continued in western Sudan. On October 5, the Joint Force, an alliance of armed groups supporting the Sudanese military, announced that its fighters and army units had captured Bir Saliba in West Darfur following clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The territorial claim was made by the army-aligned alliance and was not independently verified in the report.

Sudan has been devastated by fighting between the regular army and the RSF since April 2023, with the conflict killing tens of thousands of people and forcing millions from their homes.

Burhan’s message signals his government’s stated willingness to participate in US-backed diplomatic efforts, although no new ceasefire agreement or framework for negotiations was announced.
