WASHINGTON: The United States and China have agreed to reduce tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods and establish a dialogue on artificial intelligence following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington.
According to a White House statement, the tariff reductions will cover US exports including agricultural products, wood and cosmetics, as well as Chinese imports such as small appliances, toys and decorations.
“The two countries reached consensus on recommendations for more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction,” the White House said.
The three-day summit between Xi and US President Donald Trump concluded on Friday, with both sides highlighting diplomatic engagement despite limited major public breakthroughs. Xi has since returned to Beijing, China’s state news agency Xinhua reported.
The two countries also agreed to establish a trade council and extend the outcomes of earlier negotiations held in Kuala Lumpur, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
The agreements come after Washington and Beijing extended their existing trade truce by two months. The truce had been due to expire on November 10, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying the extension would provide additional time for negotiations toward a broader trade agreement.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described Xi’s visit as significant for bilateral relations.
“This historic visit enriched the constructive and stable China-US relationship, upheld the overall stability of bilateral ties, opened a new chapter in China-US relations, and will have a far-reaching impact on world peace and development,” Wang said.
