Macron Says France, US Discuss Efforts to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that he and US President Donald Trump discussed diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, increase shipping through the strategic waterway and reduce tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking after meeting Trump in New York, Macron said the two leaders shared a desire to “do everything to open (…) Hormuz” and “free up volumes”.
Their talks also covered efforts to secure oil shipping routes through the Red Sea without further escalating regional tensions.
Macron said Ukraine was another major focus of the meeting, with discussions addressing how allies could provide stronger and faster assistance to Kyiv, particularly air-defence interceptors.
The two presidents discussed the need to help Ukrainians “even faster and stronger” in terms of interceptors for defence, Macron said.
They also revisited “the initiatives that could be taken to find a moratorium on energy issues” related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Macron said he was scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and that further discussions involving the French, American and Ukrainian sides were planned for Tuesday.
