A criminal case has been registered against several police officers and other individuals in Karachi over allegations that they fabricated evidence and attempted to implicate a citizen in a false case to extort money.
According to the FIR, the suspects allegedly prepared a fraudulent site inspection report and arranged fabricated documents and false witnesses to strengthen the case against the complainant.
Investigators further allege that Rs100,000 was transferred into the citizen’s bank account and was subsequently intended to be presented as evidence against him.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) said its investigation uncovered evidence of alleged forgery and manipulation of official records during the police inquiry.
Two former station house officers of Shah Latif Police Station, along with an investigation officer, have been nominated in the case. Details of the alleged roles played by individual police officials have also been incorporated into the FIR.
The allegations include fraud and misuse of official authority as part of what investigators suspect was an attempt to frame the citizen and extract money from him.
The registration of the FIR marks the beginning of criminal proceedings, and the allegations against the nominated individuals have yet to be established in court. The accused will be entitled to due process and an opportunity to contest the charges.
