Around 70 people, including pregnant women, were evacuated from the gynaecology ward of Lahore General Hospital on Tuesday after a fire broke out and filled parts of the building with smoke.
The blaze was brought under control shortly after it started, preventing it from spreading further. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported.
According to initial reports, the fire was caused by a short circuit in electrical wiring in the ceiling, although hospital authorities have yet to announce the findings of any formal investigation.
Smoke spread through the gynaecology ward, prompting staff to evacuate patients, attendants and others from the affected section as a precaution.
Approximately 70 people were moved to safety, including pregnant patients receiving care at the hospital.
A security guard became unwell during the emergency and was taken to Lahore General Hospital’s emergency department for treatment. The hospital administration later said his condition was stable and he was out of danger.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of fire and electrical safety at hospitals in Pakistan, particularly following the recent blaze at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad that killed 14 newborns.
