A woman whose family alleged that her newborn had disappeared from a private hospital in Nazimabad has admitted that she was not pregnant and had presented a fake ultrasound report, police said, shifting the investigation towards possible negligence by the hospital and its medical staff.
According to investigators, the woman said she had suffered a miscarriage after getting married in 2024 and subsequently came under pressure, leading her to continue presenting herself as pregnant.
Police said she visited hospitals and underwent ultrasound examinations during this period but did not consult doctors about the results.
The controversy erupted when the woman’s family accused the Nazimabad hospital of negligence and alleged that a baby had disappeared following an operation. The hospital disputed the allegation, maintaining that no child had been delivered because the woman was not pregnant.
A subsequent medical examination and medico-legal report found no evidence of a recent pregnancy, according to police.
Investigators said hospital staff had relied on an ultrasound report displayed on the woman’s mobile phone. The document was subsequently found to be unauthenticated.
Despite the woman’s admission, police are continuing their investigation into the hospital’s conduct. Investigators said there appeared to have been serious procedural negligence in taking her to the operating theatre without first conducting appropriate examinations and tests to confirm a pregnancy.
The doctor involved told investigators that no baby was found during the operation. According to the doctor’s statement, the woman had arrived as an emergency patient and told staff that she had been receiving regular treatment at another hospital.
Police are now seeking to establish why surgery was performed when the woman was not pregnant and why basic diagnostic procedures capable of confirming a pregnancy were apparently not completed beforehand.
Statements from the doctor and other hospital employees have been recorded, while investigators are examining CCTV footage, medical records, laboratory results and other documentation connected with the case.
The woman’s husband has meanwhile submitted a complaint against the hospital.
Police said legal proceedings could be initiated against the hospital, the doctor or other individuals if the investigation establishes negligence or other wrongdoing.
