The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon recorded 1,030 projectile trajectories in southern Lebanon between August 21 and 27, warning that the security situation remains fragile despite a decline in violence compared with earlier this year.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said the figure amounted to an average of 147 projectiles per day during the seven-day period.
“Despite lower levels of violence than earlier this year, the situation in south Lebanon remains fragile,” UNIFIL said on Friday.
The mission warned that continued hostilities were taking a heavy toll on civilians, with homes and essential infrastructure damaged as communities struggled to recover.
UN peacekeepers continue to monitor developments and engage with the parties in an effort to prevent further escalation, UNIFIL said, stressing that adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 remained essential to restoring stability.
Adopted following the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, Resolution 1701 calls for a cessation of hostilities and restricts armed deployments in the area between the Litani River and the Blue Line to the Lebanese armed forces and UNIFIL.
The latest figures came as Israeli forces intensified operations in southern Lebanon on Friday. Reports said demolitions were carried out in three towns, while Israeli troops advanced towards Aita al-Jabal and fires broke out in several areas. Nearby locations were also subjected to artillery fire.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said two people had been killed and eight injured over the previous two days. It put the overall toll from Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon since March 2 at 4,352 dead and 12,318 injured.
Israeli forces remain deployed in parts of southern Lebanon, including positions held for decades and additional territory entered during fighting in 2023 and 2024.
The renewed violence comes as uncertainty continues over the future of UNIFIL, whose current mandate is due to expire at the end of 2026. Lebanon has called for the peacekeeping force to maintain its presence in the south, arguing that it remains important for regional stability.
