Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family announced, saying the celebrated singer and songwriter “died peacefully today in Nashville.”
The family did not disclose a cause of death.
Parton’s death was announced through her official Instagram account in a video featuring her nephew, Bryan Seaver, speaking on behalf of the family.
In an obituary, her family described Parton’s life as “a rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see,” paying tribute to her music, songwriting, humour and philanthropy.
“Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience,” the family said, adding that her seven-decade career had inspired generations of musicians and fans.
One of the most influential figures in country music, Parton built a career spanning seven decades, becoming known internationally for her distinctive voice, prolific songwriting and enduring catalogue of songs.
Beyond music, she became widely recognised for her philanthropic work, with the family saying her commitment to improving the lives of others would remain an important part of her legacy.
“Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact,” the family said.
