The Sindh government has withdrawn the weekly Saturday holiday for schools across the province, restoring a six-day academic week for both public and private educational institutions from August 1.
A notification issued by the School Education and Literacy Department said all schools operating under its administrative jurisdiction will hold classes from Monday to Saturday until further orders. The latest directive supersedes previous instructions governing the weekly school schedule.
The move effectively ends the five-day school week and is aimed at ensuring greater continuity in teaching and learning across the province.
The decision follows calls from several teachers, who argued that the Saturday holiday had disrupted classroom continuity and slowed students’ academic progress. They maintained that longer weekly breaks affected learning ability, classroom participation and overall educational performance.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government is considering extending summer vacations for schools in flood-hit areas as persistent monsoon rains continue to disrupt normal life in parts of the province.
The proposal comes after the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) advised the Punjab School Education Department not to reopen schools in flood-affected districts, citing concerns over the safety of students, teachers and other staff.
Officials said the recommendation, which could keep some schools closed beyond mid-August and possibly until September 1, 2026, is awaiting final approval. Authorities are expected to make a decision after reviewing the evolving flood and weather situation.
