Iran has denied any involvement in projectiles launched from Iraq toward Saudi Arabia, dismissing accusations that it was behind the latest attempted attacks on the kingdom.
An Iranian military official told state broadcaster IRIB on Wednesday that blaming Tehran for attacks targeting U.S. interests or Saudi Arabia reflected “a serious misunderstanding” of the regional situation.
The official also firmly rejected any suggestion that Iran was connected to projectiles fired from neighbouring countries at targets inside Saudi Arabia.
The denial came after Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry announced that its air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed several drones that were reportedly targeting oil facilities in the kingdom’s Eastern Province.
Saudi authorities said the drones had been launched from Iraqi territory by groups aligned with Iran, an allegation that Tehran has categorically denied.
The exchange marks the latest escalation in tensions as regional powers trade accusations over a series of cross-border attacks amid an increasingly volatile security environment.
