The devastating wildfires that have scorched parts of France and Spain for several days have begun to subside, although emergency crews remain on high alert and many communities continue to deal with the aftermath.
In southwestern France, electricity provider Enedis said around 1,370 households were still without power, mainly in the Landes and Gironde regions.
Authorities in Gironde said the largest wildfire was stabilised after firefighters managed to contain several overnight flare-ups. More than 2,000 firefighters remain deployed to secure the affected areas and extinguish lingering hotspots.
Since the fires began, 126 firefighters have been injured while battling the blaze in Gironde.
Elsewhere, a wildfire in the southeastern Var region has been brought under control after destroying nearly 4,800 hectares of land. In neighbouring Landes, where around 3,600 hectares were burned, hundreds of firefighters remain at the scene to prevent the fire from reigniting.
Despite the improving situation, Gironde and Var remain among 65 French departments under elevated wildfire risk alerts.
France’s national weather agency has also issued orange heatwave warnings for 16 departments, with another spell of extreme temperatures expected to increase the risk of new fires.
