DR Congo Ebola Cases Top 2,000 as MSF Warns Outbreak Is Outpacing Response

Jarida Report

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is spreading faster than efforts to contain it, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned on Wednesday as the number of confirmed infections surpassed 2,000.

MSF called for an urgent expansion of the medical response, saying current containment measures are insufficient to curb the rapidly growing epidemic, which has spread across 41 health zones in just two months.

According to the Congolese Health Ministry, the number of confirmed cases reached 2,011, including 754 deaths, as of Wednesday. The outbreak, which was declared on May 15, has recorded a case fatality rate of 37.5%.

The virus has spread across five provinces: Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu and Tshopo.

MSF said the epidemic is expanding at an unprecedented pace, reaching new areas while response efforts continue to lag behind the scale of the outbreak.

The humanitarian organisation urged authorities and international partners to strengthen surveillance, treatment capacity and community engagement to prevent further transmission.
