The death toll from the devastating fire at a crowded pub in Bangkok has risen to 30, while 76 people have been injured, Thai officials said on Tuesday.
The blaze broke out shortly before midnight on Sunday at the Na Ladprao pub in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. Authorities said at least 25 people, including the venue’s owner, remain in critical condition.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene on Monday, said preliminary findings suggest the tragedy began with an electrical fault.
«”Musicians at the venue described smoke from a circuit breaker near the stage, followed by a power outage and an explosion,” he said, adding that most victims died from smoke inhalation.»
The incident is believed to be Thailand’s deadliest nightclub fire since the 2009 Santika Club disaster, which claimed 66 lives during New Year’s Eve celebrations.
In response, Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Unsit Sampuntharat said authorities would strengthen safety inspections at entertainment venues and take legal action against businesses found violating licensing regulations.
Officials have ordered the pub to remain closed for 30 days as investigators continue to determine the exact cause of the fire.
