Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 4,561

The death toll from Venezuela’s twin earthquakes last month has climbed to 4,561, as rescue and relief efforts continue across the country, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on Monday.

Providing the latest update, Rodriguez said 16,740 people have been injured since the powerful earthquakes struck on June 24.

Authorities have so far provided assistance to 128,324 families and established 107 temporary shelters, which are currently housing 20,231 displaced people. Another 17,907 people remain without permanent housing.

Rodriguez added that the earthquakes damaged 856 buildings, including 190 structures that completely collapsed.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the South American nation was struck by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, just seconds apart, triggering one of the country’s deadliest natural disasters in recent history.
