Wildfires Sweep Across Sicily as Firefighters Battle Multiple Blazes

Jarida Report

Multiple wildfires have erupted across the Italian island of Sicily, prompting a major emergency response as firefighting teams worked from the air and ground to contain the advancing flames.

According to Italian news agency ANSA, fires broke out in several parts of the greater Palermo region, including Montelepre, Roccapalumba, Castronovo di Sicilia and Prizzi.

One of the largest fires, in the Sagana area of Montelepre, began on Friday evening and was still burning on Saturday. In Roccapalumba, around 30 hectares of land were affected by fires in the Ina Casa, Timpi and Borgo Manganaro areas.

Authorities deployed helicopters, Canadair firefighting aircraft, firefighters, forestry personnel and civil protection teams to tackle the blazes. Emergency crews also spent hours battling separate fires in Castronovo di Sicilia and near the Manganaro junction in Prizzi.

Officials have not yet reported any casualties or the cause of the fires as efforts to contain the outbreaks continue.
