NDMA Issues Flood, Landslide Alert as Fresh Monsoon Spell Approaches

Jarida Report

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood and landslide alert ahead of a fresh spell of monsoon rains expected to affect large parts of Pakistan from July 10 to 13.

The NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) warned of possible flash floods, landslides and overflowing streams, particularly in the country’s northern regions.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, with rain also expected in major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad.

Thunderstorms and rainfall are also likely to affect southern Punjab, upper Sindh and parts of Balochistan on July 11 and 12.

The NDMA warned that intense rainfall could trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas, raise water levels in rivers and streams, and cause landslides that may block roads in mountainous regions. It added that the risk of landslides is expected to remain high in northern areas from July 11 to 13, while flood threats in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir could persist until July 14.
