US President Donald Trump appeared to mistakenly refer to Iran as the “Islamic Republic of Japan” while speaking at the NATO summit on Wednesday.
Discussing a missile attack on a US aircraft carrier, Trump said:
“We had 111 missiles shot by the Islamic Republic of Japan. They shot our aircraft carrier (USS Abraham Lincoln) over one hour and every one of them was knocked down.”
Trump appeared to be referring to Iran, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran. The remark quickly gained attention on social media, where clips of the apparent gaffe circulated widely.
