NDMA Issues Rain Alert as Fresh Weather System Approaches Northern Pakistan

Jarida Report

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide weather alert as a new weather system is expected to enter northern Pakistan on Monday, bringing widespread rain until July 10.

According to the NDMA, rainfall is forecast in Azad Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, the Potohar region and northeastern Punjab. Rain is also expected in areas around the Indus and Jhelum rivers, as well as the upper catchments of the Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej.

The authority has warned of a risk of landslides in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. It also expects a slight increase in water levels in the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers, along with higher inflows into Tarbela and Mangla dams.

The NDMA said there is currently no major threat of widespread river flooding. However, localized flooding in hilly areas, hill torrents and small streams, as well as urban flooding and inundation in low-lying areas, remain possible during the forecast period.
